A comedy roast is a performance in which a subject is publicly described with devastating accuracy by people who love them. The accuracy is the mechanism. The love is the permission. Without the love, it is cruelty. Without the accuracy, it is flattery. With both, it is the most honest form of tribute ever devised — a ceremony that says “I know you well enough to identify every flaw, and I am still here.”
The format was formalised by the Friars Club in New York in the 1950s, where comedians, actors, and public figures would gather to honour one of their own by systematically destroying them for ninety minutes. The subject — the roastee — sat on a dais and absorbed the heat. The heat was always proportional to the affection. The biggest roasts were reserved for the most beloved.

The Yagnipedia Roast
The Yagnipedia is, structurally, a comedy roast that runs to three hundred articles and counting.
Every PKM tool review is a roast. Tana is described as “the most dangerous tool ever built for a developer with ADHD” — technically accurate, devastating, written with genuine admiration. Evernote is eulogised as an elephant that forgot. Apple Notes is praised for the specific achievement of being boring enough to work. Roam Research is described as the tool that made you feel smart before making you feel confused. Logseq is the open-source response that inherited Roam’s ideas and Roam’s problems.
Each review applies the same method: describe the tool with precision. The precision does the work. You do not need to mock Tana — you merely need to accurately describe what happens when a developer with ADHD sits down to write a grocery list in a tool with configurable supertags. The comedy emerges from the description. The comedy was always in the material.
This is the Aragones principle: the margin gag is funny because it is accurate, not because it is exaggerated. A tiny developer building a supertag taxonomy for produce classification while the supermarket closes is funny because it actually happened. The best roasts are documentaries.
The Structure
A comedy roast has three rules, and the Yagnipedia follows all of them:
Rule 1: Know the subject. You cannot roast what you have not used, lived with, and loved. riclib’s roast of Tana is authoritative because he spent three hours building a grocery list taxonomy instead of buying vegetables. His roast of Evernote is authoritative because he used it for years before it forgot him. The roaster must have earned the heat through experience.
Rule 2: Be accurate. Exaggeration weakens a roast. “Tana is bad” is not a roast — it is an opinion. “Tana is so configurable that a developer built a supply chain management system instead of a grocery list” is a roast — it is a fact. The fact is funnier than any joke, because facts are inarguable and jokes are debatable.
Rule 3: Love the subject. The Yagnipedia does not write about things riclib dislikes. The Yagnipedia writes about things riclib loves, has used, has fought with, and has an opinion about. The heat is proportional to the affection. The articles about Go and SQLite and Boring Technology are warm because the affection is uncomplicated. The articles about Tana and CSS and JavaScript are hotter because the affection is complicated. Complicated affection produces the best roasts.
